SRM, Site Recovery Manager protect virtual machines in different ways based on the replication mechanisms used. SRM protect virtual machines in datastore groups by using third-party replication mechanism like recovery point in DELL EMC. Individual virtual machines on a host are protected by using VMware vSphere replication.
In VMware SRM, Protected site provides business critical datacenter services and recovery site is an alternative infrastructure to which SRM can migrate services during a failure in the protected site.
Bidirectional Protection
You can use a single set of paired Site Recovery Manager sites to protect virtual machines in both directions. Each site can simultaneously be a protected site and a recovery site, but for different set of virtual machines.
